Making lemonade out of lemons.
Last month I posted pictures of my daughter wearing a beautiful necklace that I had custom made by B.A.E. Boutique. The necklace had a phrase that is widely used in the Down syndrome community. Sadly we found out that one family decided they needed to make it their own by trademarking the phrase so people could not use it without giving profits to this families "non profit". I wont go into all my feelings about this because my words may be too strong for social media and well....... trademarks are legal and binding. Seriously though, I was so sad and angry that 3 simple words created problems for this small shop because I asked them to make something for my daughter. Elizabeth and Sara were humble and said that they would just go along and give their profits to the family but I was not ok with that!
My daughter Arianna has taught me so many things in her 4 short years. She loves with all her being, she sees the good in all things and she doesnt let something knock her down. As frustrated as I was, I had to just make lemonade out of this big ol' lemon! So I came up with a plan and shared it with Elizabeth who then shared it with Sara. These ladies are so amazing! They remade a necklace with words that nobody "owns" and in all honesty is better than the first necklace, if you ask me!
Looking back at the original words on the first pendant, I realized that they were almost commanding an action of love for my daughter. I can't make anyone love Down syndrome because I want them to. The word we used to replace the "command", and thus removing the trademark infringement, actually shows the world what I choose to do - thus leading by example. I am LOVING EVERY CHROMOSOME in hopes that others see what I see and fall in love with how that chromosome makes my daughter beautiful inside and out.
Working with Elizabeth and Sara to create a piece of art for my child has made me a B.A.E. Boutique customer for life! They put up with my crazy, my sass and were willing to recreate a masterpiece that turned out better than the original!! #ourlittlebutterfly#lovingeverychromosome#beautiful@thebaeboutique1#downsyndrome#smile#love
