#ecko_trip#grandplace#brussels#belgium
We are pleased to participate to " CAPITAL OF WOKE" - the 8th edition of @poppositions opening tomorrow in Brussels.
Solo presentation of Margaret Haines @greta__mar .
Specifically re-configured for the occasion, the artist will restage her film-installation “I Dreamt In Heaven”.
This work will depart from the homonym exhibition opened at 1646 in 2017, for which it was originally commissioned. The text “Psychic Attack Twenty Seventeen” was originally commissioned by AutoItalia in London in 2018 to accompany the film. For POPPOSITIONS, a new installation of the film and text is presented in collaboration with Lily Robert.
The film “I Dreamt In Heaven” follows a child on a motorcycle as he witnesses his day. Skateboarders ask, “How about some empathy on my fries, how about some empathy to pay my rent ?” Later, inside a dance studio, two young dancers take over the floor from a lone man, a subtle cruelty.
In tandem with this short 4 min looped film, the text “Psychic Attack Twenty Seventeen” details how empathy as a term and evocative feeling has been co-opted for profit (and a derailment of financial response) by the PR industry, centrist politics, and an ethnographic film and art industry. The text further explores the word’s recent etymology and power, and how the ancient Greek empatheia meant passion, hatred even.
