TODAY in Black Film History
Born February 20, 1927 Miami, FL ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Few figures have had as vital an impact on the depiction of African Americans on screen as Sidney Poitier. Between 1950 and the late 1960s, he came to epitomize the troubled, persecuted, yet still conciliatory black man determined to assert his independence in a white world. His characters were decent, intelligent men who audiences found attractive and unthreatening.
As a teenager in the mid 1940s, Poitier moved to Harlem and worked at the American Negro Theatre in exchange for acting lessons. He performed there in plays —along side Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, and Ossie Davis— until 1950 when he made his film debut in
No Way Out, Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s violent tale of racial hatred.
Poitier’s name quickly became synonymous not only with roles of courage and dignity but also with strong box office receipts. With such films as Blackboard Jungle (1955), Edge of the City (1957), The Defiant Ones (1958), and A Raisin in the Sun (1961), he pushed Hollywood’s boundaries of racial integration even further. In 1963. Poitier became the first African American to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field.
In his interracial love stories, A Patch of Blue (1965) and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), his coming-of-age drama, To Sir, with Love (1967), and the racially provocative In the Heat of the Night (1967), Poitier continued to redefine the long overdue presence of black actors in Hollywood.
When 1970s audiences tuned into a new era of blaxploitation films like Shaft (1971) and Super Fly (1972), Poitier switched course and began directing films. With the post-Civil War drama Buck and the Preacher (1972) and a few comedies, Uptown Saturday Night (1974), Let’s Do it Again (1975), and Stir Crazy (1980), Poitier re-invented his popularity in the black community. For much of the 1980s, he all but abandoned his acting in favor of directing.
Since then, he has made occasional appearances on screen and TV, while occupying a well-deserved place in film history as a true industry pioneer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Knowledge of self. This hit home so hard cause the other day the homie @sinarambo asked me how I got the name Jungle ? I made some lame story lol but the truth is I was asked what #jjmg stands 4 and I told 'em Jungle Justice Music Group and there were slanders here and there like he from the Jungle 🤣😂 then I think some lady called me Jungle Justice I like your Music ( I had this unrealeased song called Peak - A - Boo ) then Tye just started calling me Jungle so I took it and ran with it. From there it went to The Real Jungle and finally #bigjungle. Now they know me in the city. ! I just shared this ! not for sympathy or empathy cause you know I got the heart of a Lion, the eye of Tiger, with the temperament of a Bear covered by the hide of a Rhino with the strength of an elephant lol . But know real talk ! Don't let what ever is said deter you from what you believe or goals you have set for yourself cause the most important thing is how you see yourself everything else does not matter, once you understand that concept you will soar ! Use whatever negative vibe thrown at you to fuel your Conviction and let the real you live Vicariously through the you they see and just simply Grow like a plant and keep it going staying in motion. I just had to share that ! And just for the record like @notorious_big_ I am a have all them 🦁🐯🦓🐒🦍🐅🐆🐺 hippos dancing in the Jungle 🤣😂😆😅😄😎😎😎😂🤣😅 #eguasaba available on all platforms !
"What did you enjoy doing when you were a child? What made you happy before the world became overwhelming and busy with to do lists and responsibilities?" .
I liked to cook, and draw, and explore.
I also liked to question why things were the way they were and I guess you could say I was defiant... No wonder I enjoy creating allergy friendly recipes that are healthy for my kids, it's the defiance in me, proving it is possible to cook without refined sugar, gluten, eggs, nuts or dairy and including at least one serve if fruit or vegetables and made from real non GMO ingredients...
These choc fudge cakes are heading to the school freezer for allergy friendly cake options when there are birthday celebrations at school, they're made with pumpkin and zucchini and are grain free, egg free, dairy free, nut free, refined sugar free oh and DELISH! One of our favorites
