Potato was born at a dairy farm close to my childhood home. He was taken from his mom shortly after birth + brought to an orchard. Placed in a small area with just a veal crate, he was left there to attract families with children to stop by to purchase apples + ice cream. Once the season ended Potato would have been sent to auction + sold for hardly anything. He was one of the many I’ve met at this farm - and he certainly won’t be the last. Every season brings a new baby just like him. - Male calves like Potato are a by-product of the dairy industry. Because he is male he can’t produce milk like his mother, so he’s useless to dairy farmers - on some farms calves like Potato are killed right after birth. The ones who aren’t are taken from their mothers, who grieve for them like a human would, + raised for veal or cheap beef. On many farmer’s Instagram pages when their cows have a baby they’ll write about their disappointment that the calf was born a male, how they’ll be sent to auction the next day or week + how hopefully next time she’ll have a female calf (because females = money). - How can anyone look at Potato or any others like him + say he is unworthy of love? That it’s okay to deny him of staying with his mother who was pregnant for 9 long months? That he isn’t deserving of living a full life with a natural death? That eating dairy products is more important than his life? It’s devastating. How have we allowed this to occur all for greed + selfishness? The time has come for humans to stop using the milk of another species - we wouldn’t use dog or cat milk + the same should go for cows. We must evolve + leave dairy behind. - I’m so glad Potato will live out his life surrounded by so much love, thanks to @boochaces for taking him in without hesitation. Potato + I have a lot to be grateful for when it comes to Caitlin. We both wouldn’t have the lives we do without her kindness. If she hadn’t believed in my photography I certainly wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today with my animal rights work + I’m forever thankful for all she’s done for me. Since a lot of people might not know much about me I thought I’d share a few things. - I’m Samm; I am named after my maternal grandparents. I had no relationship with my grandfather until I took care of him for the last 5 years of his life. He was a WWII vet who survived D-Day. He became one of my best friends + was the reason I started drinking soy milk. He’s also the inspiration behind me becoming a hospice volunteer years ago, something I think everyone should do. - I am an animal rights... photographer. I really dislike using that word as I don’t feel I’m deserving of calling myself that yet, even though it’s my job + passion. To me humans like Sebastião Salgado are worthy of the title; watch the documentary The Salt of the Earth tonight. - The sole purpose of my work is to be a voice for the animals. - My first connection to veganism was as a child. My parents took our family to a restaurant + ordered my brothers + I lobsters. When the waiter brought out the lobster + placed him/her in front of me my eyes started to well up. I couldn’t hold back the tears + locked myself in the bathroom for the entire dinner. After that I wasn’t allowed past the seafood section in stores because I’d start yelling about how they all deserved to be back in the ocean. - I’m an extreme introverted empath. I feel for everyone, not just animals. - I have no training whatsoever in photography + only picked up a camera a few years ago. I went to college to become a police officer. In high school I felt there should be more female officers + ones who genuinely cared about people. I always said I’m not a fan of most cops, but that’s why I wanted to become one. I could get back to being one tomorrow, but I love what I’m doing. - My favourite animals are deer + cows. I also adore opossums, raccoons + foxes. I’m dying to photograph kangaroos, @estherthewonderpig + field mice. - I’m not impressed by money or material possessions. I don’t have much of either. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love cars + grew up around them; but having cool stuff doesn’t make you a decent person. - Curious about anything else? Leave a question below! 💛

A few nights ago @boochaces messaged me to tell me someone had donated a substantial amount of money to Rancho Relaxo in honor of my work. There’s no way - I didn’t think it was real. I sat trying to figure out who would possibly do such a thing. I was brought to tears as I read the letter sent with the donation: “due to support + advocacy of Sammantha Fisher from the Alex Tirpack Foundation.” I’m positive Alex doesn’t want recognition, but I must acknowledge him + his generous, meaningful gift. - Alex has been a supporter of my photography since day one. I remember when he messaged me to compliment my work when I first started. It was the boost of confidence I really needed because I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. Being me, I didn’t want to learn from anyone. I insisted on teaching myself everything I could about photography + developing my own style. A little while later Alex connected me with a local publication + he was the reason I was published for the very first time. - Alex has shown me that he has more courage + grace than most, myself included. Unfortunately for all of us we do not get to decide what happens to us during our lifetimes from accidents to cancer to enduring things that make us question our existence. But we do get to decide how we react to these events, where we go from that starting point + how we change because of it - for better or worse. - Alex + I have both been given a second chance at life. Both completely different situations + what I’ve been through is nothing at all in comparison to him. Not even close. Alex is a survivor. A gifted writer. An inspiration to me + countless others. His greatest attribute without question is his beautiful heart. - Thank you, Alex, for believing in me + for extending your kindness to Rancho Relaxo. I will never ever forget it + either will Murdock, Toast + Crew. - Without Caitlin + Alex you probably wouldn’t be viewing my work today. I have so much love for these two people + also all of you who have cheered me on, supported me + been there with words of kindness when I needed it most. I’m so thankful BEYOND WORDS. 💛
