Off to a good start with some sculpture hauling and a little help from my friends, the awesome crew from city of marietta parks!
Thanks Donna Krueger and Dk Gallery for the invitation!
On to the next park in downtown Atlanta. I’m honored to share this work with you.
:::: Thinking about the invisible and overlooked labor of women - what we make with our time - and how our poetry is made too. :::: This is my Grandmother Vi’s sewing machine. :::: Among other things she’s stitched together, she reupholsters furniture. :::: The second image is her latest tally. She tracks all the things she makes & bakes, and each visit is an update. :::: Vi is also a scrapper - can’t let those scraps go to waste! Makes them into dolls or bags or other gifts she gives away. :::: Earlier this week, she went through and pulled out all the scraps that were white / all the camouflage or wildlife prints / all the plaid flannel / and all the flowers or calico. :::: I brought these back with me - and will be setting up my own sewing station here. :::: Over the coming year, I’ll be bleaching and dyeing and over-printing these scraps with material I’ve gathered in my recent travels home. Stories from the women in my family, and others I’ve met - about our relationships with men, with work, with land and water, with labors of love - and with proposals for new mines and oil pipelines, which they say bring “jobs” (but also man camps, and a lot of destruction.) :::: I’ll be using the taconite I’ve been gathering to make dyes and inks - and I’ll be reassembling these scraps into quilts for future daughters and granddaughters. :::: I’m anxious to get started - even though I know it’ll be a frustrating and heartbreaking process (these always are) - but already I’ve got Grandma Vi calling me daily to check in! :::: She wants pictures - my own tally - even though I’m pretty sure she thinks I’m nuts. :::: I think apples & trees. :::: Once you get on her call list, that’s just the way it goes. :::: #overburdenoverlook#godeepgohome#felt#documentarypoetics#publicart#climatechange ::::
Rarely does one get the opportunity to make hundreds of children smile, get inspired and look forward to attending school every day. That's what made this project extra special. Santa Cruz Higher Secondary School, Fort Kochi, is one of the oldest schools in Kerala. When we got the chance to give it a happy makeover, we decided to give it all we got. Special thanks to @nerolacpaints for making this happen and to the teachers and students at Santa Cruz Higher Secondary School for being such gracious hosts.
Here's a look!

#metroart#contemporaryart#metronapoli#sitespecific#sitespecificart#publicart
