A little inspiration for a different way to celebrate the day of love, which could be just about any day, really.
This Valentine’s Day, we gathered a few people to contribute for roses and letters to hang up on the Love Tree which was set up at the School of the Deaf in Beau Bassin, Mauritius. The idea of Love Tree was to make all the students write inspiring letters about friendship and what it means to them, get creative, be expressive - just pen it all down and have it hung on the tree. Then whoever gets the rose, comes and collects a random letter of their choice and it is theirs to keep.
It was an interesting day since nothing of this sort has ever been organized at the school before and the concept was quite new to the staff as well as the students, which made the whole idea even more special. It made everyone feel important and involved, and that is a wonderful gift you can give to anybody. It doesn’t take much but you never know, it can make a whole world of a difference to someone 💕
Kalief Browder (May 25, 1993 – June 6, 2015) was an African American man from The Bronx, New York. In 2010, at the age of 16, Browder was accused of the theft of a backpack and its contents, which included a camera, $700, a credit card, and an iPod Touch. Awaiting his trial, Browder was jailed on Rikers Islandfor three years, nearly two of which were spent in solitary confinement. He was released when the prosecutor's case was found to be lacking evidence against Browder and the case's main witness had left the United States. Two years after his release from prison, Browder died after hanging himself from an air conditioning unit outside his mother's home. Browder's supporters say his suicide was the result of mental and physical abuse sustained in prison. His case has been cited from activists campaigning for the reform of the New York City criminal justice system and has attracted widespread attention in the years following his death. In 2017, Jay-Z released a television documentary.
Peace for Haiti
Political turmoil has left Haiti paralyzed for over a week now. The kids at the orphanage and the new friends I met not too long ago cannot leave their homes in fear of the violent protests. Food and drinking water are scarce or just too expensive. @teemhaiti is currently collecting monetary donations to send to the orphanage. I’ll be donating any profits from my prints this week to them and to some of the women I grew close to. If you know me, you can also order directly from me. .
