So this lovely still life was painted by my mother, Alice Porter Ripley, in 1982. It was one of my Dad’s favorites - and now I have it. I am in the midst of purging most all my craft supplies, and reorganizing my studio which I have had in our basement since we moved in 19 years (!) ago. Whoa - the stuff you keep! .
My mom’s gifts, love and artistic influence have been on shelves down there. Giving me subtle guidance, as I do this painter’s journey. The time has come to rearrange those memories a bit, too. I tucked her black beret away in one of her last favorite wooden boxes with a pearl inlay dot on top, propped up her teddybear she made for me, hung her painter’s smock in the closet and stored that one and only painting she helped me with. Her painting days were behind her when my interest grew, but I remember her instructions that day, working in her basement. Missing you this week, Mom, as I turn the corner and create my own painting studio. .
I am so curious to see any of my mom’s art that she sold in Portland shows and galleries in the 1970s. If any family friends have an A. Porter painting, please share. .
Life didn't go quite as planned yesterday (update coming at ya in my stories) but I tried to remind myself to just roll with the punches (or wheel spins...) I mean we are travelling after all, and laugh it off.
So we put it down to future storytelling, had a beer and some chips and dip, and chilled the F out.
REMINDER - if life is stressing you out, do the same thing. Or go find a beach, it will have the same effect 😎
One of the things I love about being a designer is seeing the final outcome of a design and knowing how much the client is happy about it!
