Today is my son's birthday and it is giving me all the feels. He is three. I feel like I was just walking out of the hospital with him. I have these two journals where I [try] to write little entries on occasion. I am disappointed with my lack of entried to be honest. I am dusting then off and putting them out on my desk so I can make a much better effort. I would love to pass these on to them one day when they're older. There are too many tines in a day or week where I think to myself....I hope we remember this forever.
The name “lavender” is derived from the Latin term “lavare”- “to wash.” Romans used lavender oil in their famous public baths as an important step in the bathing ritual. The herb was so valuable in Roman times that a pound of the blossoms sold for a month’s wages!
When used in aromatherapy, lavender has been shown in clinical trials to relieve stress and anxiety and promote restful sleep. That’s one of the reasons why Eau de Provence is especially enjoyable right before bed!
Tips to improve digestion without spending a dime:
1) Deep breathing and relaxation techniques before eating. Relaxing before eating turns off the body's sympathetic system aka fight or flight. We want to be relaxed so we can rest and digest or else our food will not be digested and we wont absorb the nutrients 🤷♀️
2) Avoid drinking a ton of liquids with meals. It dilutes the digestive juices which will throw off digestion leading to bloating, gas, etc.
3) Be grateful for your food and imagine how it will nourish your body. I know this sounds crazy but even if you're eating a slice of pizza truly enjoy it and be grateful. If you are stressed while eating and you are basically telling your body "this food isn't good for you, you're going to feel awful". I always questioned why people had to pray before each meal and honestly I understand now - there is a huge spiritual and emotional factor when it comes to digestion.
4) Chew your food well and sloooow down! I'm guilty of eating fast and I have to remind myself to slow down. Chewing your food really well until it is a mush, helps cut down the work for the rest of the digestive tract.
As much as I love supplements - I believe we need to work from the inside out and create these habits so we can truly heal and don't have to rely on supplements forever. Of course they are very helpful short term, but you have to get to the root of why you are experiencing bloating, gas, irregular bowel movements, etc. There is no magic pill and it truly is a lifestyle 🧘♀️
Fridays are for learning! I’m fortunate to work only Monday-Thursday, so I set aside this day most weeks to soak up as much herbal knowledge as I can. I started taking this path seriously nearly two years ago, but it’s slow going- there’s SO MUCH to learn. CHICKEN ANS RICE NOODLE PHO
This comforting soup is an excellent cold remedy. It’s quick and easy to make and packed with nutrients.
1.5 litres good-quality chicken or vegetable stock (I use bouillon)
A 2cm peeled fresh ginger
1 red chilli
4 tbsp soy sauce
200g dried rice noodles
400g diced chicken breast
4 halved baby pak choy
A few fresh mint, coriander and basil leaves
1 sliced red chilli
Juice 1 lime
1 red pepper
10 starts tender-stem broccoli
3 sliced spring onions
Place stock in a large pan with the fresh ginger, red chilli, soy sauce, lime juice and dried rice noodles. Bring to a boil, add diced chicken breast, then simmer for 4 minutes.
Add the baby pak choi and sliced red pepper to the pan and cover with a lid.
Leave on low heat for 10 minutes.
To serve, ladle into bowls and garnish with a few fresh mint and basil leaves, slice lime, red chilli for extra heat and 3 sliced spring onions.
